ss.7.c.3.8: Branches of Government

The legislative branch is congress. Congress consists of two houses, the senate, and the house of representatives. In the constitution, the number of representatives for each state depends on the population of the state. There are 435 members in the house of representatives because as the population of each state grew, they limited the amount of people in the house of representatives. Every 10 years, after the census is taken down, Congress checks the population of each state to see how many representatives the state should have. The voters elect their representatives and the elected representatives works for their district boundary to keep the number of people they work for almost even. Gerrymandering is the practice of making district lines that prefer a party of group of people. Representatives are held for two years and if a representative dies, and election if held to elect another representative. The Senate is a much smaller house and only 2 senators are chosen for each state no matter the population. These senators are elected to serve 6 years.
